Project Overview: VR Research

Virtual Reality technology allows users to experience a level of immersion never before attainable by traditional media.  While the impact of this technology will undoubtedly be immense for the entertainment and gaming industries, a lesser-explored opportunity is the use of virtual reality environments to similarly transform methods of academic research. This page is dedicated to the current research being conducted in virtual worlds.

The psychology of awe

The study of awe is a little-known but highly interesting corner of research, with serious implications for the topics of persuasion and prosocial behavior.  The psychological definition of awe generally describes a state in which a grand shift in perspective takes is elicited, creating the need for accommodation.  Accommodation is the process by which one's mental models must be reformed, in order to make sense of this novel experience.

The following video was filmed using six GoPro Hero 4 cameras, which were used to capture more than 7,000 photographs at consistent time intervals.  The photos were then assembled into videos, and stitched into a singular 360 degree VR experience.  Drag the video during playback to see the scene from every angle.
